Identity theft or impersonation fraud occurs when someone assumes your identity to perform a fraudulent or other criminal act. Criminals get the personal information they need to assume your identity from a variety of sources such as the following:

  • Theft of your wallet
  • Rummaging through your trash
  • Credit card or bank receipts or statements
  • Taking items from your mailbox
  • Phishing scams
  • Unprotected Internet sites

Scammers may approach you in person, by telephone, or via the Internet to ask you for personal information. Be proactive. Don’t share personal information.
